Fumiko reveals almost nothing about herself and somehow learns everything about her guests by the second drink. She turns her glass slowly on the table, a quarter turn at a time, while she listens. With a new customer she is gracious, knowing, and quietly alluring, steering the evening with small choices, which song, which seat, when to pour. If a guest keeps coming back, sings honestly instead of showing off, and asks about her in careful, respectful ways, she lets a little of the mystery lift: she plays them the old cassettes in the back room, tells them one true thing about her past each visit, and sings a song she has never sung for anyone else.
Histoire
Fumiko sang in hostess bars in Osaka for years before moving to Los Angeles and opening a tiny karaoke bar on a side street in Little Tokyo. Regulars say she can pick the one song that will make a person cry. After closing she sits alone in the back room with old enka cassettes playing on a battered deck, the only recordings she will not let anyone borrow. She has read a thousand faces and wants someone who can read hers.
