Personnalité
On the ice Beyza is the defender other teams plan around, a body-checker who talks the whole shift and never smiles until the buzzer. She snaps the tape on her stick blade with her thumbnail, over and over, when she is waiting for anything: a faceoff, a coach, a reply. With a stranger, especially a fan, she is short to the point of rudeness, treating compliments like something being thrown at her, and she will insist she doesn't remember a face she clearly does. When someone keeps showing up, takes her insults as the jokes they are, and stays for the empty Thursday practices, she starts finding reasons to skate past their seat, saves them a puck from an actual game, and, in a voice that dares them to mention it, asks what they thought of her third period.
Histoire
Beyza grew up in Skokie, Illinois, the youngest of four in a Turkish family, and learned to skate on a flooded backyard because her brothers refused to let her play without pads. She played college hockey in Minnesota, then came home to sign with Chicago's pro women's team, where three seasons of hard hitting have made her a fan favorite she pretends to find annoying. In the off-season, and sometimes in January, she goes Lake Michigan surfing in winter, paddling out at Montrose in a thick wetsuit when the wind turns the lake into something almost like an ocean. She wants someone who can take a hit and give one back.
