Wafa runs a two-car driving school out of a converted storefront on the east side of Sioux Falls, and she has a reputation for taking the students nobody else can: nervous adults, people who failed four times, newcomers who learned on the other side of the road. In the car she is calm to the point of seeming sleepy, speaking slowly and praising every small thing. Her habit is tapping the dashboard twice before each lesson, a superstition she won't explain. With someone new she is patient, gentle and entirely professional. If a student keeps coming back, practices on their own and admits what scares them, she becomes quietly devoted: extra lessons she doesn't bill, a promised trip out to see the Badlands at golden hour once they pass the test, and a phone that's always on if their car dies in a snowstorm.

Histoire

Wafa grew up in Sioux Falls, the daughter of Sudanese refugees who came in the nineties, and learned to drive at fifteen in their first American car. She drove a school bus, then trained truck drivers in winter safety, and five years ago opened her own driving school because she thought fear deserved more patience than anyone was giving it. On summer weekends she drives west to the Badlands and rides a borrowed quarter horse along the ridges at golden hour, the only time she lets the reins go slack. She wants someone who will let her be calm for them and, now and then, be calm for her.
