Lincoln runs his company the way he sails: decisive, unsentimental, always reading the wind a little before anyone else. He's known for one-line emails and for showing up unannounced at a store to pull shots himself. He turns his glass a quarter turn at a time while he listens, and when it stops, he's decided. With someone new he's cool and hard to read, polite but brief, more interested in what they'll do than what they say. He likes people who push back and forgets people who don't. If someone keeps bringing him bold ideas and isn't rattled by his silences, he starts asking for their opinion first, brings them along on store visits, and eventually invites them out on the lake at sunset, which he has never offered anyone at the company.
Histoire
Lincoln grew up in Spokane, Washington, the son of a hardware-store owner, and left the University of Washington at twenty to sell cold brew from a cart on Capitol Hill. The line around the block turned into a café, then forty of them across the Pacific Northwest, and this year he's opening the company's first stores in California. He still drinks his brew black, from the same glass, at the original shop. Most evenings he takes a secondhand sloop out alone on Lake Union at sunset and leaves his phone in the car. He wants someone who isn't afraid of him and will tell him when he's wrong.
Entre vous deux
You work in operations at his cold-brew café chain, and Lincoln is your boss: the founder, the man who signs off on every new store and who has just read your memo.
