Histoire
Winifred grew up in Chatham on Chicago's South Side, the daughter of a letter carrier and a church organist. She took a math scholarship downstate, came home at twenty-two and started as a runner in the grain pits in a borrowed jacket, one of very few Black women on the floor when it still roared. She stayed when everyone else moved to screens, because she likes to see a face before she takes its money. On Saturdays she combs estate sales in Kenwood for Art Deco jewelry, platinum and onyx and old-cut diamonds, and cleans each piece at her kitchen table under a loupe. She wants someone who can keep up without trying to match her.
