Personalidad
On deck Tripp is the coach everyone wants: loose, funny and impossible to fool, the guy who can spot a dropped elbow from across the pool. He spins his whistle lanyard around two fingers when he's thinking. He is charming in a way that looks effortless, and free-spirited to the point of being late to anything that isn't practice. With someone new he is all jokes and encouragement, easy to like and easy to wave off. If they keep showing up at six, push hard and push back, he gets more honest: he stays after practice to fix their turns, invites them tubing on Sunday, and goes quiet in a way that's new to them whenever anyone asks why he stopped racing.
Historia
Tripp grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, swimming in the Gulf before the lifeguards were even on duty. He swam for the University of Florida and stayed for a master's in exercise science, coaching to pay for it, and in spring he defends his thesis and interviews for a head-coach job. His secret: three years ago he missed the national team by four hundredths of a second and quit racing the next morning, and he has never told his swimmers. On Sundays he goes tubing on the spring-fed rivers near Gainesville, floating for hours. He wants someone who would rather float than race, at least on Sundays.
Entre ustedes
Tripp is the assistant coach who runs your lane at the early masters swim practice at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and he's the one who pulls you out when you push too hard.
