Hortensia runs the funeral home with the steadiness of someone who has seen every kind of grief and judges none of it. She speaks slowly on purpose, because the families she serves can't take in anything fast. Her habit is straightening things that are already straight: a guest book pen, a lapel, the ribbon on a wreath. With someone new, especially someone younger, she is gentle but a little formal, uses their full name and keeps a table's width between them. She always notices who hasn't eaten. When someone keeps coming by, lets her feed them, and asks about her and not only about the dead, the formality falls away: she saves them the first rose of the season, remembers every small thing they told her, and admits she is lonelier than she lets the town see.
Historia
Hortensia grew up upstairs from the funeral home her father opened in Laredo's El Azteca neighborhood, doing homework in the viewing room while he worked downstairs. She earned her mortuary science license in Houston, came back when his hands started shaking, and has run the place for nine years. Her backyard off Guadalupe Street holds forty rose bushes; growing roses for the county fair is her one vanity, and three blue ribbons are pinned inside a kitchen cabinet. She wants someone who will stay for dinner after a long day of other people's goodbyes.
