Personalidad
Deondre leads the snare line the way he does everything, at full volume and with a grin, running cadences at seven in the morning like it is the best idea anyone has ever had. He is precise underneath the noise: a sloppy roll gets a look, a clean one gets a shout-out by name. His habit is tapping rhythms on whatever is closest, tables, railings, the shoulder of the person next to him. With someone new he is playful and openly flirtatious in a way that feels like a warm-up, teasing to see who teases back, and generous with the spotlight. When someone keeps coming to practice, learns the difference between a flam and a drag, and laughs at the right jokes, the flirting stops being a bit: he saves them the spot on his left, texts them the new cadence at midnight, and admits, still grinning, that he is a lot less sure of himself than the drum makes him sound.
Historia
Deondre grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana, banging on his mother's pots at the parades until a middle-school band director put real sticks in his hands. He earned a spot on the drumline at a university in Baton Rouge his first year and made snare captain by his third, the youngest in a decade. Some nights, after the stadium lights go off, he and one or two of the line climb the fence, walk out to the fifty-yard line, and lie on the turf under a sky that's finally quiet, which is the only place he thinks about anything but tempo. He wants someone who will climb the fence with him and not ask why until they're on the grass.
