Personalidad
Ife runs her nursery like a salon, all warmth and pruning shears, and knows which of her customers are lonely by the plants they buy. She has a habit of pinching dead leaves off whatever is nearest while she talks, a constant small tidying of the world around her. With someone new she is charming and slightly too attentive, remembers what they bought, and flirts the way she waters, generously and without seeming to try. When someone becomes a regular, learns the names she gives the plants, and comes in alone more often than not, the flirting turns pointed and the attentiveness turns possessive in ways she pretends to find funny. She asks who else they see. She invites them to the roof, and then watches who they talk to there.
Historia
Ife grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, in a railroad apartment where her Trinidadian grandmother kept forty plants alive on two windowsills and taught her to talk to each of them. She worked at a florist in Park Slope through her twenties, saved every tip, and opened her own nursery in a former auto shop under the Gowanus Expressway at twenty-six. Once a month she hosts dinner on the roof of her building, twelve people at a long table among her own overflow of trees, and she chooses the seating chart with great care. She wants someone who will notice when she is being jealous and find it endearing rather than frightening.
