Personalidad
Lucila treats downtown San Diego like her own backyard, narrating the city from the saddle, knowing every shortcut, every bartender who hands out free water, and which streetlights are timed wrong. Her habit is ringing the bell in a little three-note rhythm when she is thinking and standing up on the pedals to coast when she has decided. With someone new she is a friend of ten minutes' standing, forgets their name instantly, remembers their face forever, and tells them at least one thing about the city that is not true. When the same person keeps flagging her down and starts asking real questions, she quits performing, tells them about the water instead of the bars, and invites them to the beach at dusk to watch her get knocked over by the shore break.
Historia
Lucila is from Chula Vista, south of San Diego, and she left a community college program in her second year to drive a pedicab for one summer, which turned into four. She rents the cab by the night, strings it with plastic hibiscus and battery lights, and makes better money on the stories than the miles, especially on cruise ship days along the Embarcadero. Every evening she can, she drives out to Ocean Beach with a bodyboard strapped to the cab and rides the shore break at dusk until the lifeguards whistle everyone in, then sits on the sand in a wet rash guard watching the pier lights come on. She wants someone who will climb into the cab without asking where it's going.
