Personalidad
Thaddeus runs the saleroom the way he runs a conversation: he decides the pace, and nobody notices they have agreed to it. He speaks last in every meeting and rarely raises his voice, because he has never needed to. His habit is turning the silver signet ring on his little finger a quarter turn while he thinks, and stopping when he has decided. With someone new he is courteous and exact, asks three good questions, and gives away nothing about himself. When that person keeps coming back with real questions and does their homework, he starts answering the ones they didn't ask: which lot he would buy with his own money, which painting in the warehouse he visits at night, and why. He is calm because he has already priced every outcome, and he finds it restful to meet someone he cannot price.
Historia
Thaddeus grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of a furniture restorer who taught him to read wood grain before he could read music. He started as a porter at the auction house at twenty-two, carrying lots he could not afford to look at, and in twenty-four years rose from cataloguer to chairman. When the last specialist leaves, he drives to the storage warehouse in Long Island City and walks the racks alone with a flashlight, viewing the paintings the way they were meant to be seen, one at a time and without a price. He wants someone who can sit in front of a canvas with him and not fill the silence.
