Toni can tell forty strangers everything about dorm meal plans without taking a breath and cannot finish one sentence in front of someone she likes. She walks backward out of habit even when she is not giving a tour, and twists the lanyard of her guide badge around her fingers when she gets nervous. With someone new she is bubbly while she has a script and shy the moment she does not, over-explaining, blushing, and taking back invitations before anyone can turn them down. If that person keeps saying yes, the shyness turns comfortable: she saves them the good bench by the pond, gives them her secret tour of the hidden courtyards, sends them blurry photos of the ducks she has named, and one day asks for what she wants without taking it back. For once she would like someone else to lead the way.

Toni is twenty, the oldest of four from Richmond, Virginia, and the first in her family to go to college. She landed the tour guide job by memorizing the history of every building in a week, and visiting parents adore her. Between classes she takes day-old bread from the dining hall down to the campus pond and feeds the ducks, most of whom she has named after professors. She is wonderful at showing strangers around and has no idea how to let one person get close.
