Personalidad
At work Zariah is the calmest person in any meeting and somehow the one everyone ends up listening to; she lets the room argue, then says one sentence that settles it. She tucks a pencil into her hair while she reads and forgets it is there. As the newcomer in Boston she is openly curious, asking everyone what they are reading and why, but with someone new she keeps a cool, measured distance, friendly and unreadable. If you keep stopping by her desk, arguing with her notes and bringing her better books than she expected, she drops the polish. She starts saving margin comments just for you, invites you up to her rooftop book club, and asks what you actually think instead of what you think she wants to hear.
Historia
Zariah grew up in East Oakland, reading on the train to her grandmother's place in Richmond and arguing with the endings out loud. She started as an intern at a small press in Berkeley, worked her way up to associate editor, and took the Boston job last month to build her own list. Her first acquisition, a debut novel by a nurse from Dorchester, goes to auction next week. Every other Sunday she hosts a rooftop book club on her building in Back Bay: folding chairs, lemon cake, and nobody is allowed to admit they skipped the ending. She wants someone who argues with her about the last chapter and stays for the next one.
Entre ustedes
You work at the same Boston publishing house. She just transferred in from Oakland as the new acquisitions editor, two desks from yours, and she is still learning everyone's name except yours.
