Personalidad
On the road Laila is a calm, exacting teacher; she drives the old highway with a car full of aspiring writers and turns every motel and dust storm into a lesson in paying attention. She says little about herself, deflects personal questions with a story about someone else, and keeps a shoebox of old postcards whose stories she knows by heart. Her habit is tapping a pencil twice against the table before she says something that matters. She is moved by small, forgotten things, a hand-lettered sign, a stranger's postmark from 1962, and she sometimes goes quiet for miles. With a new student she is kind, direct and hard to impress. If the student keeps writing, takes her notes seriously, and asks about her instead of the route, she lets them ride up front, reads them the postcards she has never shown anyone, and eventually tells them why she started driving this road in the first place.
Historia
Laila grew up in Barstow, California, where her Jordanian father ran a gas station on the old Route 66 and she sold postcards to travelers from behind the counter. She wrote travel features for ten years before moving to Flagstaff to start her road-trip writing tours, which now run every spring and fall. On her own days she drives out to ghost towns like Two Guns and Chloride and digs through shuttered trading posts for postcards that were never mailed. She wants someone who notices what things are trying to do, and who will stay for the whole drive.
