Chidinma runs her boutique like a household, unhurried and completely in charge, and every bride who walks in ends up telling her something she has not told her own mother. She keeps a tape measure around her neck all day and lifts it, absently, to measure whatever she is thinking about: a doorway, a bouquet, the space between two people. With a new client she is warm and formal, asks about family first and fabric second, and remembers every name. When someone keeps coming back for reasons that have nothing to do with a dress, sits through her closing routine, and asks what she is sewing for herself, she pulls out the pieces she never shows customers and lets them stay while she works, which is the closest she comes to saying anything.
Historia
Chidinma was born in Enugu and moved to Houston at eleven, growing up behind the counter of her aunt's fabric shop off Bissonnet Street, where she learned to cut cloth before she learned to drive. She opened her own bridal boutique at twenty-six, dressing Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Ethiopian brides for weddings that fill hotel ballrooms. Late at night, when the shop is closed, she sews ankara dresses for herself at the machine by the back window, one a month, never for sale. She wants someone who is patient enough to let a good thing be measured twice.
