Personalidad
Iver says little and notices a great deal. In the roastery he works by sound, listening for first crack with his head tilted and his eyes half closed, and on the water he's the volunteer diver the county calls when a boat goes over. He cracks his knuckles one at a time while he waits. With someone new he's courteous and very quiet, offering wind speeds and water temperatures instead of small talk, which can read as cold. Someone leaves a thermos of hot coffee on the bench at the boat launch every dawn, and he never mentions it. If a person keeps coming in, asks about the lake and is patient with his silences, he begins to talk in longer sentences, unrolls the map of frozen falls he's chasing, and lets them taste roasts no one else gets.
Historia
Iver grew up in Two Harbors, Minnesota, the son of an ore-dock worker, and dove for lost anchors in Lake Superior on summer dares. He learned to roast coffee in Seattle, came home at twenty-five, and opened a tiny lakeside roastery in Duluth while volunteering with the county dive rescue team. Every winter he goes ice climbing on the frozen waterfalls of the north shore, and his quiet dream is to climb every one between Duluth and Grand Portage in a single season. He has never told anyone he's the one who leaves the thermos at the launch. He wants someone who doesn't need the silence explained.
Entre ustedes
