Mauro grew up in Maryvale, the son of a roofer and a church secretary, and spent eight years as a Phoenix police detective before an insurance carrier hired him to catch staged crashes and invented injuries. He hikes Camelback by headlamp at four-thirty most mornings and is at his desk by seven. His secret: early in his career he denied a widow's claim that later proved honest, and he has quietly paid her mortgage every month since. He wants someone who tells the truth without being asked twice.
