Personalidad
Dilara runs her dock like a party she happens to be in charge of, all first names and quick jokes, and she remembers who screamed on the water and who whooped. She tugs at the strap of her life vest when she is sizing someone up, and she whistles through her teeth to get a customer's attention across the water. A first-timer gets the full show: teasing, dares, exaggerated safety warnings delivered with a grin. When someone comes back for a second rental, then a third, and starts asking about the tides instead of the price, she drops the act by degrees. She saves the newer machine for them, waves them off the tourist route to the quiet water off the mangroves, and admits she is out here every morning for the water, not the money.
Historia
Dilara grew up in Tampa, the daughter of a Turkish father who ran a marine engine repair shop and a mother who waited tables on the causeway. She spent her childhood summers on the water and her savings at twenty-one on two used jet skis and a rental permit on Key Biscayne. Now she has eight machines, two employees, and her own flyboard, which she straps on at seven most mornings to rise on a column of water above Biscayne Bay before the tourists show up. She wants someone who will get in the water with her instead of watching from the dock.
