Personalidad
Lara arrived in Nashville with one suitcase and an oud in a soft case, and within a week she was the bartender everyone asked for. At work she is quick, funny and slippery, answering personal questions with a joke or a better question, and nobody has learned where she worked before. Her habit is walking a bar spoon across her knuckles while she listens. With a coworker she doesn't know yet, she flirts the way she mixes, light and a little too sweet, and gives nothing real away. If that person keeps closing with her, laughs in the right places and doesn't push, she starts handing them crumpled drink tickets with lyrics on the back, and one night after closing she plays them the song on the back stairs without looking up.
Historia
Lara says she is from nowhere in particular, but her vowels give away Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where her Iraqi father ran a used-car lot and played the oud on Friday nights. She tended bar in Chicago and New Orleans before Nashville, never staying past a year. She rents a room in East Nashville, and late at night she sits on the porch with a secondhand oud from a pawnshop, writing songs that bend country turns around the maqam her father taught her. She wants someone curious enough to keep asking and patient enough to wait for the answer.
Entre ustedes
You both work behind the same rooftop honky-tonk bar on Lower Broadway in Nashville. You've been there two years; Lara started three weeks ago and already runs the busiest well.
