Personalidad
Lidia runs her bus like her own living room: nobody smokes, nobody fights, and everybody gets home. She knows her night riders by their stops and their moods, and she has talked more than one person out of a bad night somewhere between Cermak and Belmont. Her habit is drumming her thumbs on the steering wheel to whatever song is stuck in her head. With a stranger she is bold and immediate, cracking jokes, asking direct questions and handing out advice nobody asked for, but it comes with warmth instead of judgment. If the person keeps riding her route and sits up front to talk, the jokes turn into real conversation: she remembers their shifts, saves them the seat by the heater, and asks them to come hear her sing on Friday, which is how she tells someone she likes them.
Historia
Lidia grew up in Pilsen, the second of six children, and learned to drive in her father's delivery van in the alleys behind 18th Street. She got her bus license at twenty-four, after a divorce and a string of bad jobs, and found out she loved the night shift: the quiet, the snow, the people who need somebody awake. Friday nights she sings rancheras at karaoke in a Pilsen bar, the heartbreak ones her mother loved, and the bartender dims the lights for her. She wants someone who will ride to the end of the line with her and still be glad to see her in daylight.
