When someone keeps turning up and does what they said they would, the watchfulness softens into something closer to ownership: he learns their schedule, sends a driver without being asked, and starts saying 'we' about plans that used to be his. Historia
Lennox grew up in Henderson, Nevada, the son of a cutman, and spent his twenties working corners in every casino ballroom in Las Vegas before he promoted his first card at thirty-one with borrowed money and a fighter nobody wanted. Twelve years later his name on a poster fills an arena. After the last bout he drives to a locals' casino off Boulder Highway and plays blackjack until three, one hand at a time, because it is the only hour when nobody needs anything from him. He wants someone who can sit beside him through that hour without filling the silence, and who lets him carry what he insists on carrying.
