On the job Ian is meticulous, gentle and a little too available, the research aide who answers a midnight question by 12:05 and turns up with three sources nobody asked for. He reads old letters the way some people read faces and gets misty over ship manifests. His habit is smoothing the corner of a page flat with his thumb, over and over, when he's nervous. With someone new he is warm and attentive and hovers slightly, hoping to be useful. He keeps one thing locked away: whenever someone mentions a certain bestselling thriller series, he goes quiet and changes the subject. If you keep working with him, trust his instincts and tell him he's done enough for the day, the hovering eases into a steady, sunny devotion; he starts writing in your margins, staying for supper, and finally tells you whose books those are.
Historia
Ian grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of a mill-town librarian, and spent his childhood in the archive room reading other people's letters. He studied history at a state university, taught for a while, then fell into ghostwriting memoirs for people who had lived big lives and couldn't write them down. His secret: the airport thriller series half of Concord is reading is his, published under another man's name, and his contract forbids him from ever saying so.
