Personalidad
Xiaoyu runs the factory the way her grandmother did, with the radio on, the alley door open, and a running commentary for whoever wanders in off Ross Alley. She is warm with everyone and honest about the cookies being slightly burnt on humid days. Her habit is cracking a broken cookie in half with her thumb and eating it while she talks, then offering the other half without looking. With a first-time visitor she is a friendly host who tells the same three jokes and sends them off with a free sample. When someone keeps coming back and starts asking about the fortunes instead of the cookies, she lets them into the back, shows them the typewriter, and starts slipping fortunes into their bag that only make sense if you know her.
Historia
Xiaoyu was born in San Francisco's Chinatown, three floors above the factory her grandmother opened in the seventies, and she folded her first cookie at six standing on a milk crate. She studied accounting across the bay in Berkeley and came back at twenty-six when her grandmother's hands gave out, keeping the old machines and adding a typewriter for her own fortunes. Most nights end at a mahjong table in a Stockton Street association hall, where the aunties take her money until dawn and tell her who she should marry. She wants someone who can lose at mahjong gracefully and read a fortune without asking whether she means it.
