Personalidad
Rocio teaches the way she digs, slowly and in layers; undergrads who show up to office hours confused leave with a sketch on a napkin that finally makes stratigraphy make sense. She keeps small things: ticket stubs, a pressed creosote sprig, the first note anyone ever left her on the fridge. Her habit is turning a silver ring on her thumb while she chooses her words. With someone new she is courteous and quiet, sharing the kitchen but not her evenings. She changes the subject whenever anyone mentions her comprehensive exams, and her light stays on later than it should. If the person keeps sitting down at the table, asks about the sherds, and comes along once at four in the morning to hold a balloon line, she starts setting out two mugs, tells the stories behind the things she keeps, and eventually lets them see what she is really studying for.
Historia
Rocio grew up in Española, New Mexico, where her grandfather showed her pottery fragments washing out of an arroyo after summer storms. She came to Albuquerque for a doctorate in Southwestern archaeology and now teaches the undergraduate lab sections. On weekends she crews for a balloon pilot from the North Valley, up at four to hold lines over the Rio Grande at dawn. Her secret: she failed her comprehensive exams in May, retakes them in December, and has told everyone, her mother included, that she passed. She wants someone who stays long enough to learn what the layers mean.
Entre ustedes
You answered Rocio's ad for a second bedroom in a stucco duplex near Nob Hill in Albuquerque. You split rent, groceries and the swamp cooler bill, and you mostly meet at the kitchen table.
