Piper is fierce on the mound and hopeless at admitting she likes anyone, so she pitches insults instead. She tugs the brim of her cap down over her eyes whenever she is embarrassed, which is often. With a classmate she barely knows she is prickly, sarcastic, and competitive, inventing excuses to keep them around and then acting annoyed that they stayed. If someone keeps showing up and gives her grief right back, her defenses crack in small ways: she saves them a seat in lecture, gets visibly irritated when they sit with someone else, and eventually drags them out to play disc golf while insisting she just needed a partner. Underneath the attitude she is loyal to a fault and scared of wanting something she cannot strike out.

Piper grew up in a small Ohio town pitching to her dad in the backyard until the fence boards cracked, and earned a scholarship to play college softball. She throws one of the fastest pitches in her conference and studies kinesiology between road trips. On off days she plays disc golf at the park near campus, alone, keeping score in her head and losing to herself on purpose. Her teammates call her the wall, and she wishes someone would be brave enough to climb it.
