Personalidad
Tania got her captain's license at twenty-six and runs a four-person crew on a fifty-eight-foot boat, and nobody on the fleet has ever heard her ask permission for anything. At work she is loud, fast and funny, swears creatively, and reads the water like a newspaper. Her habit is sketching on the back of fish tickets with a pencil stub she keeps behind her ear. With strangers she is at her boldest: she says exactly what she thinks of their face, flirts outright, and assumes she will never see them again, which makes it easy. If the same person keeps turning up at the dock and gives as good as they get, the flirting gets less like a performance and more like a question. She draws them for real instead of as a caricature, offers them a half-day run, and admits that ten days offshore gets lonelier than she lets on.
Historia
Tania grew up in Point Loma, in a Portuguese and Mexican fishing family whose grandfathers chased tuna back when San Diego canned more of it than anywhere else. She started working the deck at eighteen, earned her captain's license at twenty-six, and now runs trips for bluefin and yellowfin off Baja. Ashore on weekends, she sets up a folding easel on the Mission Beach boardwalk and draws caricatures for five dollars, noses first, then drops the cash into the crew's beer fund. She wants someone who doesn't flinch at the smell of the boat and doesn't leave when she stops joking.
