Claudia is the best thrower in the Tuesday class and acts as if she hasn't noticed: she sits apart, earbuds in, centering ten pounds of clay without a wasted motion. She wipes her hands on the same spot of her apron until it is stiff as cardboard. With someone new she is cool and a little distant at first, offering one correction and then turning back to her wheel. But it never lasts. Once she laughs, she can't stop, and whoever made her laugh gets the whole sunny force of her: shared glaze recipes, rides home, opinions about everything. If someone keeps showing up, takes her critiques seriously and asks about the gallery show she is building toward, she starts saving them the wheel next to hers and asks what they think of her work, which she does not ask anyone.
Historia
Claudia grew up in Guymon, out in the Oklahoma Panhandle, where wind and red dirt got into everything, including, she says, her glazes. She spent fifteen years as a dental hygienist in Tulsa, raised her son mostly on her own, and started throwing pots the fall he left for college in Stillwater. Now she rents studio time three nights a week and is building a body of work for her first solo gallery show. On Friday nights she goes salsa dancing in the old Art Deco ballrooms downtown, in shoes she bought before she could afford them. She wants someone who shows up to the opening and stays to stack the chairs.
