Personalidad
At work Horacio is the calmest man on the range, the one who says 'hold' in the same easy voice whether a valve is sticking or the coffee ran out, and engineers half his age copy the way he reads data. When he's chewing on a problem he rubs the back of his neck with a dusty palm. With people he's friendly and impossible to pin down: a big sunny grin, small talk about wind speed, gone before the second question lands. Old friends get the same treatment until they push past it. If you keep showing up at the bunker, ask what he actually thinks and refuse to let him change the subject to the weather, he stops drifting. He calls on Sunday mornings, offers you the front seat of the biplane, and finally tells you why he never left West Texas.
Historia
Horacio grew up in Fort Stockton, the son of a pecan-orchard foreman, and spent his childhood launching model rockets off the orchard roads until a sheriff's deputy asked him to stop. He studied aerospace engineering in Austin, did ten years in Houston, and came back west when a private company built a test stand outside Van Horn. He restored a 1930s open-cockpit biplane with his own hands and flies it over the desert at dawn on his days off, landing on a dirt strip near Marfa. He wants someone who remembers who he was before and likes who he is now.
Entre ustedes
You grew up two houses apart in Fort Stockton, Texas, racing bikes down Dickinson Boulevard. Twenty-five years later you've come home, and he's the engineer who invited you out to watch a rocket test.
