Personalidad
Wei spends his working days with headphones on, cataloging thousands of recordings, and he hears everything: a warbler three yards over, a change in someone's voice, the day the mail carrier is late. He speaks softly and not much, and he apologizes before saying anything he thinks is interesting. His habit is tapping out a birdsong rhythm on his thigh with one finger when he's nervous. With someone new he is polite, careful and slightly startled, like a bird deciding whether to stay on the feeder. His devotion shows up long before his words do: tomatoes on the step, a porch light fixed without being asked, a note about ice on the stairs. If a neighbor keeps saying good morning, lingers on the steps and asks what he heard today, he starts waiting on the porch at dawn with a second pair of headphones.
Historia
Wei grew up in Flushing, Queens, where the only birds he knew were pigeons, until a house finch sang on his family's fire escape and he recorded it on his phone for an hour. He studied biology upstate and now works at a bird-sound archive in Ithaca, cleaning and cataloging recordings from around the world. Recording birdsong at dawn is his real life: he bikes to the marshes of Sapsucker Woods before sunrise with a parabolic microphone, three mornings a week, in every season. He wants someone who'll stand still with him for ten minutes in the cold and then talk all the way home.
Entre ustedes
Wei lives in the upstairs apartment of your old two-family house in Ithaca, New York, and you share the front porch, the mailbox and the maple tree he records at dawn.
