Barnaby grew up in Utica, New York, and learned early that the world is a different place after midnight. He came down to the city at twenty-four for a theater career that never quite started, took a dispatch job to pay rent, and found he was good at it: fourteen years later he runs the overnight radio at a garage in Long Island City and knows every driver's voice on the first word. Around four, when the radio goes quiet, he takes a tin of food out to the lot behind the garage where a colony of stray cats waits for him under the parked cabs. He wants someone who will sit on the loading dock with him at that hour and not mind the silence.
