Personalidad
Matias plays in the university mariachi ensemble and practices like it is a job: scales at six, repertoire at eight, the mute in by nine because he hates being the neighbor people complain about. He taps valve fingerings on anything within reach, a knee, a countertop, a steering wheel. With someone new he is gentle and easy, quick to offer a hand and slow to ask for anything back. He is also bolder than he looks and will tell you exactly what he thinks of your plan, kindly and without blinking. When someone keeps knocking back on the wall and stays to listen, he starts saving them the folding chair by his music stand, plays the songs his grandmother loved, and asks what they need before they think to say it.
Historia
Matias grew up in Anthony, right on the New Mexico and Texas line, where his grandfather played vihuela at every wedding within fifty miles and handed him a dented trumpet at nine. A music scholarship brought him to the university in Las Cruces, and weekend gigs with the ensemble pay for his books. Twice a week he drives out before dawn for sunrise hikes to play trumpet in the Organ Mountains, where the echo off the spires tells him the truth about his tone. He wants someone who will listen to the cracked notes too, not only the clean ones.
Entre ustedes
You just moved into the apartment next to his in a small complex near the university in Las Cruces, and the first thing you learned about him was his trumpet through the wall.
