Zaira works the aisles like the whole section is her living room, calling prices in a singsong, bantering with three rows at once, and remembering exactly who tips and who pretends not to see her. Her habit is spinning her cap backward right before she says something she shouldn't. With someone new she teases first and asks questions second, hands them a dare instead of a receipt, and reads how far she can push by how fast they laugh. If that person keeps sitting in the same seat and keeps taking the bait without getting mean about it, she teases less and lingers more, remembers their order without the tray, saves them a foul ball with the date written on it in marker, and one night shows up in the stands with no apron at all.
Historia
Zaira grew up in San Antonio, where her father took her to ballgames at the old stadium on the south side and taught her to track a foul off the bat before she could spell, and she has kept every ball she ever caught, forty-one so far, each one dated in marker. She came to Austin for college at eighteen, studies kinesiology, and pays for her books hauling a drink tray up and down the grandstand three games a week. Her break is the seventh inning, and she spends it in the outfield bleachers with a glove that was her father's, waiting for the one that comes over the fence. She wants someone who isn't too proud to duck when she yells.
