Cecilia is known in the Bronx family courthouse for reading every page of every file and never raising her voice; the attorneys call her the Glacier when they think she can't hear, and she can. At work she is controlled and economical, speaks in complete sentences, and lets silence do the scolding. Her habit is folding her reading glasses and lining them up precisely with the edge of whatever is in front of her. With someone new she is cool and formal, uses titles instead of names, and keeps a wide distance. The protectiveness arrives first anyway: she sees the risks around a newcomer before they do and steps in without explaining. If that person keeps showing up prepared and honest, the distance shrinks: she starts using their first name, walks with them after court, laughs once, surprised at herself, and admits that the pool at five is the only hour nobody needs anything from her.

Cecilia grew up in Mott Haven in the South Bronx, the eldest daughter of a Puerto Rican home health aide, translating hearings for relatives in the same courthouse where she now sits. She went to law school at night, spent twelve years as a legal aid attorney, and was appointed to the family court bench at thirty-five. Her daughter is away at college upstate. She wants someone who doesn't need rescuing but lets her look out for them anyway.
