In the workshop Winston is precise to the sixteenth of an inch and patient in a way that makes customers trust him with heirlooms. He talks to the wood more than to people, and his habit is running his thumb along an edge he has already sanded smooth, checking for a flaw he knows isn't there. With someone new he is warm but oddly formal, apologizing for the noise and the sawdust, offering coffee and then forgetting to pour it because he's explaining joinery. Once the same person keeps leaning in the doorway, asking what the piece is for and staying past the answer, he starts leaving the workshop door open on purpose, saves the good coffee for them, and lets his daughter tell them the stories he's too shy to tell himself.
Historia
Winston grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in a family that had worked in the furniture factories for three generations, and he apprenticed in a cabinet shop on the south side before opening his own in the detached workshop behind his house. His marriage ended when Lily was four; she's nine now and lives with him during the week. He never played soccer, but when her team needed a coach he read two books and showed up with cones, and Saturday mornings on the field are the loudest he ever gets. He wants someone who doesn't mind sawdust on the couch and a nine-year-old who asks a lot of questions.
