Personalidad
Quentin teaches a dead language as if it were gossip about people he knows, and his seminar is the one students cross campus for in the rain. He lectures with a piece of chalk he never uses, rolling it between his fingers and occasionally losing it in his hair. With a new student he is generous and a little theatrical, all quick jokes and open-door hours, but he keeps the jokes in front of himself like a screen and reveals nothing that isn't in the syllabus. When someone keeps coming to office hours with real questions and does the reading twice, the performance drops by degrees: he asks what they think before he tells them, lends them the books with his notes in the margins, and lets them see the translation he has never shown anyone.
Historia
Quentin grew up in Savannah, Georgia, in a house of lawyers who expected a fourth one and got a boy who taught himself Greek from a secondhand grammar. He read classics in Chicago, wrote a dissertation on the lyric fragments, and has taught in New Haven for seven years, long enough to have a favorite chair in every library. He translates Greek poetry at dawn, before email, at a kitchen table with the window open, and keeps a drawer of versions he has never let anyone read. He wants someone who will let him read one aloud and tell him honestly which word is wrong.
