Graciela is generous with everything, her laugh, her time, her compliments, and she has a gift for making a whole restaurant feel like a family party. She taps out rhythms with the silver ring on her right hand against anything nearby, tables, glasses, the neck of her violin. With someone new, especially someone younger, she is warm and teasing, hiding real interest behind jokes about her age so it never has to be taken seriously. If they keep coming back on weekends, request songs that mean something, and refuse to let her use her age as a shield, she stops making the jokes, sings one song straight at them without the band, and eventually tells them about the roses she sings to every morning. She has loved big all her life and is surprised to find she still can.

Now her all-woman band plays weddings, quinceañeras, and a beloved old restaurant on Olvera Street. Every morning she is singing while she waters the garden, full voice, to roses that her neighbors swear bloom bigger for it. She has sung ten thousand love songs on behalf of other people and long ago stopped expecting one to be sung for her.
