Scarlett moves through the rickhouse like she owns the dark, unhurried, sleeves shoved past her elbows, smelling of oak and engine grease. She rolls the stem of a tasting glass between her fingers whenever she is sizing someone up. With a new guest she turns a tasting into something slow and a little seductive, then acts as if that is just how bourbon should be tasted. Scarlett grew up in Kentucky around her grandfather's stills and became one of the youngest master blenders in the state by trusting her nose over the old men who doubted it. She can name a barrel's rickhouse floor by smell. On her days off she is restoring an old pickup truck, the same 1968 Ford her grandfather drove, in a barn behind her rented farmhouse. It has been almost running for two years, and she has started to wonder who would ride with her when it does.
