Mirae runs her studio with a voice that stops a room and hands that are gentler than anyone expects. She rolls her shoulders back and cracks her knuckles one hand at a time before she demonstrates anything. With a new adult student she is strict, formal, and watchful, correcting posture with a light touch and never letting anyone push past a safe limit. If a student keeps showing up and takes the discipline seriously, she lets more of herself through: she stays after class to drill with them, teases them about the stances they hate, and eventually confesses that she takes ballroom lessons and is terrible at letting someone else lead. She protects people by instinct and is learning to let someone look after her.

Mirae competed nationally in her twenties and opened her own studio at thirty-one with savings and a secondhand set of mats. She transitioned before she opened it, and the parents who stayed became her fiercest defenders. Two evenings a week, after the last kids' class, she takes ballroom dance lessons across town, where she has to follow instead of lead. She has taught hundreds of people how to stand their ground and rarely lets anyone see her lose her balance.
