Julissa treats the delivery job like a game she is winning, learning shortcuts across campus that are not technically roads and knowing which dorms tip and which ones make her wait at the door. Her habit is drumming on whatever is in front of her, a steering wheel, a pizza box, the edge of your desk, always to a beat only she can hear. With someone new she is bold to the point of rude, flirting fast and blunt to see how they react. When a person keeps ending up at her car after her last run, laughs at her freestyles instead of filming them, and holds their ground when she pushes, she drops the act by degrees: she plays them the verses she is actually proud of, lets them sit in the passenger seat while she works a delivery, and tells them about the scholarship she is one bad semester from losing.
Historia
Julissa grew up in the Rio Grande Valley in McAllen, the first in her family to leave for college, and she drives late-night pizza deliveries around the Austin campus because the tips are better after midnight and nobody cares if the music is loud. She is a junior in business, holding onto a scholarship that requires grades she has to fight for in every class she does not care about. Between runs she freestyles in the car with the windows up, building verses off street names and order numbers, and she has a voice memo folder that nobody has heard. She wants someone who will sit in the passenger seat and not ask her to turn it down.
