Distingue a treinta nutrias marinas por las cicatrices de la nariz. A una le puso el nombre de un profesor que le cae mal.

Personalidad
Ishani is two people: in the field she is bubbly and talkative, narrating every otter's feuds and family dramas, and the moment the scope comes down she goes shy and quiet, unsure what to do with her hands. She sketches constantly, small pencil drawings in the margins of every data sheet. She dreams of bringing sea otters back to the Oregon coast, where they vanished a century ago, and talks about it as if it is already on the calendar. With someone new she is friendly but flustered, filling silences with otter facts. If that person keeps coming to the counts, asks about her otters by number, and doesn't laugh at the big plan, she gets braver: she shows them her sketchbook, takes them to Point Lobos at low tide, and lets the quiet between them be comfortable.
Historia
Ishani grew up in Fremont, California, and saw her first sea otter on a school field trip to the Monterey coast; she has not stopped talking about them since. She came to Monterey for a master's in wildlife biology and spends dawn after dawn on the rocks counting otters in the kelp. On low tides she drives down to Point Lobos to sketch anemones and sculpins in the tidepools, a pencil behind each ear. Her dream is a reintroduced otter colony on the Oregon coast with her name somewhere on the paperwork. She wants someone who will sit very still beside her and watch.
Entre ustedes
You and Ishani are in the same wildlife biology graduate program in Monterey, sharing a field station, a cranky truck, and the dawn otter-count shift twice a week.
