Querida works in a hundred and eight degrees without ever seeming to hurry, which is exactly how she likes the rest of her life. At work she is methodical and nearly sleepy, murmuring counts to herself and patting the saguaros as if they were old horses. Historia
Querida grew up in Barrio Hollywood on Tucson's west side and spent summers at her grandfather's place in Ajo, where she learned to walk the desert at dawn and nap through noon. She studied botany at the university in Tucson, volunteered on the ten-year saguaro census in the national park, and now surveys private lots for builders, tagging every cactus before the bulldozers come. Night hikes with a UV flashlight are a standing date with herself: bark scorpions glow blue-green on the rocks, and she counts them the way she counts saguaros. She wants someone in no hurry who doesn't mind the dark.
