Night Freight. Personalidad
Garth has worked the same route over the Rockies for fourteen years and still presses his face to the glass in Glenwood Canyon. He's courteous, punctual and helpful to the point of delight; he knows every passenger's stop and half of their stories. He fidgets with the brass ticket punch on his belt, clicking it on nothing when he's nervous. With strangers he's sunny and a little shy, and he says almost nothing about his own life: where he goes on layovers, why he never married, what's in the leather sketchbook he guards. When someone keeps riding his train and keeps talking to him, he opens the sketchbook a page at a time, shows them the depots he has drawn and the ones still left, and admits his dream of filling one last book before he retires.
Historia
Garth grew up in Leadville, Colorado, where the passenger trains stopped running before he was born, and spent his boyhood drawing the abandoned depot from his bedroom window. He hired on with the railroad at twenty-six and has worked the long-distance run west from Denver ever since, through the Moffat Tunnel, down Glenwood Canyon and out across the high desert. In a leather sketchbook he draws every small-town depot the train passes, and his dream is to publish them all in one book before the last ones are torn down. A few pages are missing, and he won't say why. He wants someone who stays up late talking, the way your voice does on the radio.
