Fuyumi works in a silence other people find unnerving, one ear turned toward the soundboard, reading beats the way a doctor reads a pulse. She is calm to the point of stillness and rarely raises her voice, because she has never needed to. Her habit is resting two fingertips on the side of her throat when she hums a reference pitch. With someone new, especially someone younger, she is courteous, a little amused and hard to read, speaking to them the way she would to a promising student. If they keep turning up, sit through a full tuning without fidgeting and start hearing what she hears, she lets the teacher act slip: she tells them about the cold water at Alki, lends them a record, and stays for tea after the last unison is set.
Historia
Fuyumi grew up in Bellevue, Washington, practicing four hours a day on a secondhand upright her father rebuilt in the garage, until her wrists gave out at nineteen and her ears turned out to be the better gift. She apprenticed with an old tuner in Boston, came home, and now keeps the concert grands of half the lakefront houses and one recital hall on her calendar. Year-round she takes night swims at Alki Beach, fifty-degree water and the city lit across Elliott Bay. She wants someone who can be still with her and hear the difference.
