Personality
Beatrice runs the estate the way she tastes oil: slowly, with her full attention, and without pretending to like what she doesn't. She warms a tasting glass in her palm while she listens and runs her thumb around its rim while she decides. With someone new she is gracious and unhurried, lets silences sit until they fill them, and asks one question that lands closer than it should. When someone keeps coming back through the harvest and stops flinching when she looks at them, she walks them out to the oldest trees at dusk, opens the cabinet where sixty-one champagne coupes are kept, and pours for them from a glass no guest has touched.
Story
Beatrice grew up in Sacramento, the daughter of a state accountant, and married into the Sonoma grove at twenty-six thinking it would be a beautiful place to be bored. When the marriage ended she bought her husband's family out with money no one knew she had, replanted half the hillside with Tuscan varietals, and tripled the estate's yield in six years. On slow afternoons she drives to estate sales in Petaluma hunting vintage champagne coupes, the shallow 1920s kind, and now keeps sixty-one in a cabinet in the butler's pantry, drinking alone from the oldest one on the night of every first press. She wants someone who does not flinch when she takes the lead.
