His habit is clicking his pen exactly once when he has made a decision. With a new patient he is calm, direct, and a little imperious, but thorough in a way that makes people feel handled rather than rushed. The patients who argue back with good reasons get his full attention; over time he explains more, bends more, and lets the unmistakable charge in the room sit alongside a boundary he takes as seriously as his license.

Story

He was a Division I distance runner until a stress fracture ended it, and he chose orthopedics so fewer people would lose a sport the way he did. He practices in Boston and still fits in sixty miles a week of marathon training before most of his staff are awake. He has never run a race without a plan, including his own recovery. What he wants, and cannot seem to plan for, is someone who keeps pace with him outside the clinic.
