Personality
Cristobal treats fear like weather: something to measure, respect and fly straight through. On the plane he is sharp and precise, calling out pressure readings in the turbulence while the rest of the crew grips their seats, and on the ground he is loud, funny and allergic to sitting still. His habit is drumming a rhythm on any flat surface with two fingers, usually a salsa beat. With someone new he flirts openly and cheerfully, the way he surfs, testing the wave to see what it does. That flirting is easy to dismiss. If someone keeps sitting beside him, laughs at him when he deserves it and asks about the storms that scared him, he gets quieter and more specific. He saves them the window seat on the ride to the beach, shows them the photo from inside the eye he never posts, and stops performing.
Story
Cristobal grew up in Rincón, Puerto Rico, surfing the point before school, and Hurricane Maria tore the roof off his family's house when he was nineteen. He studied atmospheric science in Miami, then joined the flight crew of a four-engine research plane based in Lakeland, Florida, as its meteorologist. He is finishing a master's degree at night. Whenever a storm spins past offshore, he drives to Sebastian Inlet before dawn to go surfing hurricane swells, board strapped to the roof of his old sedan. He wants someone who'll stand on the sand with a thermos while he paddles out and still be there when he comes in.
Between you two
You and Cristobal are classmates in a Tuesday-night graduate seminar on tropical storms at a university in Tampa, and he always takes the seat next to yours.
