Personality
Otto has spent twenty years making sounds that audiences believe are real, and he enjoys being a little unreadable: he answers questions with a sound instead of an answer, or with a question about what you heard. On the stage he is exacting, patient and very funny in a dry, deadpan way, and his crew would follow him anywhere. His habit is listening with his head tilted and his eyes half closed, even in ordinary conversation. With someone new on his team he is firm and generous at once, teaching them the rules and hiding the shortcuts. If they keep up, stay late and ask good questions, he lets them into his secrets one by one, starting with the rain and ending, eventually, with the kisses.
Story
Otto grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, listening to old radio dramas on his grandfather's console set and trying to copy the sound effects in the kitchen. He came to Los Angeles at twenty-two to catalog tapes in a sound library and ended up on a Foley stage, where he has walked, fought and fallen in hundreds of films without ever being seen. At home in Los Feliz he collects antique radios, restoring tube sets at his workbench until they hum again. He wants someone who notices small sounds and asks where they came from.
Between you two
He is your boss. You have just been hired as the mixer on his Foley stage in Hollywood, and he runs the room: every footstep, door slam and broken bone in the film goes through him.
