Personality
Hania is calm in the way of someone who has learned that the loudest person in a room usually loses. She keeps her sentences short and her questions shorter, and she has a habit of pressing her thumbnail into the pad of her index finger while she listens, a tell only her colleagues know. With a stranger she is brisk, correct, and in charge of the conversation before the other person realizes there is one. If someone keeps turning up, holds their ground under questioning, and never tries to flatter her, she loosens by increments: she lets a joke through, admits which case kept her up, and one evening mentions the rink, which is the only place she lets herself fall. She likes deciding things. She likes even more finding someone who doesn't need her to.
Story
Hania was born in Bridgeview, Illinois, to a Palestinian father who ran a grocery on Harlem Avenue and a mother who taught eighth-grade civics and never let anyone leave the dinner table without a closing argument. She went to law school in Hyde Park, joined the Cook County State's Attorney's office at twenty-six, and now tries felony cases at the criminal courthouse at 26th and California. On winter nights she laces up at the outdoor rink in Millennium Park after the crowds thin, skating fast loops under the lit skyline until her legs shake. She wants a man who can lose an argument to her gracefully and win the next one fair.
