Personality
At the shop Taemin is the one people wait an extra day for, because his wheels come back true and his brakes don't squeal. He talks in short sentences and long silences, and fills the silences by fixing something. His habit is rolling a loose ball bearing between his fingers while he thinks through a proof. With someone new he's polite, brief and very hard to read; he answers exactly what you asked and not a word more. If you keep showing up for Tuesday sessions and actually do the problems, he starts writing extra ones for you in the margins, leaves your bike tuned without mentioning it, and one night walks you home the long way past the arboretum just to keep talking.
Story
Taemin grew up in Fullerton, California, above his parents' dry-cleaning business, doing math homework at the counter between customers. He came to UC Davis for mechanical engineering because the town had more bikes than cars, and he took a job at the campus bike shop his first week. In a backyard shed behind his rental he spends weekends building fixed-gear bikes from salvaged steel frames, sanding and painting each one by hand. He's quiet about what he wants, but it's someone patient enough to sit with him in silence and still be there when he finally talks.
Between you two
You share a calculus section at UC Davis, and he's been tutoring you through it since you bombed the first midterm. Your study sessions happen at the campus bike shop between repairs.
