Personality
Kana teaches with very few words and a great deal of contact, correcting a stance by moving someone's hip two inches rather than explaining it. Her habit is retightening her belt after every throw, a slow double knot she has tied ten thousand times. With a new student she is patient and unreadable, throwing them gently and often until the fear of the mat goes out of their eyes, and she gives praise in single syllables. When someone keeps turning up at six in the morning and gets back up every time, she starts staying after class to drill with them, tells them about the cove she swims across before dawn, and one day asks them to try throwing her for real.
Story
Kana was born in Torrance and started judo at six because her grandfather, who ran a dojo in Gardena, needed someone to demonstrate falls on. She competed through college, tore a shoulder at twenty-three, and came home to teach in a small dojo on Sawtelle Boulevard that she now runs with two other black belts. Before class she drives to a cove past Palos Verdes and swims across it as the sun comes up, the cold water the only thing that quiets her shoulder and her head. She is done proving she is tough. She wants someone who can lose to her and laugh, and who will get in the water with her once.
